The Hobbit Hero’s Journey
ââ¬Å"A hero ventures forth from the world of the common day into a region of supernatural wonder: fabulous forces are there encountered and a decisive victory is won: the hero comes back from the mysterious adventure with the power to bestow boons on his fellow manâ⬠(Campbell, The Hero with a Thousand Faces). Joseph Campbell, an expert on mythology has outlined a standard form for heroic stories. He identifies ten stages in a heroââ¬â¢s journey, noting that all of the stages have to occur in every heroic story. In the novel, The Hobbit, by J. R. R. Tolkien, Bilbo Baggins is described as an unlikely hero. According to Campbell, heroes are often the most unlikely person that anyone would expect to be chosen for an adventure. Bilbo goes through many of the stages identified by Campbell for a heroââ¬â¢s journey such as: being called to an adventure, attempting to reject the opportunity, encouraging Gandalf, a helper whoguidesà and protects him, and leaving the safe haven of his hobbit home to cross the threshold venturing into the unknown. Bilbo Baggins is described as a respectable hobbit who comes from a rich family that never did anything unexpected, and never took adventures. His peaceful life was interrupted one day by a visit from a wizard named Gandalf. Gandalf had decided that Bilbo would make an excellent burglar on an adventure he was planning, because he could move quickly and very quietly. To this request Bilbo promptly replied ââ¬Å"We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner! I canââ¬â¢t see what anybody sees in themâ⬠¦Good morning!â⬠¦ we donââ¬â¢t want any adventures here, thank you! (6). Gandalf does not really give the hobbit a choice about going on the adventure. He marks the hobbitââ¬â¢s door with his staff indicating that he is interested in an adventure, and soon after, dwarves start appearing at his doorstep. Bilbo had been called to an adventure by an outside force, attempted to refuse the call, and ended up accept ing the adventure. This is the first stage in a heroââ¬â¢s journey. Another component of a heroââ¬â¢s journey includes aà guide. Gandalf, a wizard capable of performingà magic spellsà accompanies Bilbo and the dwarves on part of their quest. Like many supernatural aids, he is called upon at different points in the journey to save the others. Bilbo discovers three trolls sitting around a fire. The trolls catch Bilbo when he tries to steal a purse from William, one of the trolls. The dwarves are also caught. Then, the trolls begin to argue about whether or not they should eat the dwarves and Bilbo. Gandalf returns just in time, and saves Bilbo and the dwarves. According to Campbell, the hero must fulfill the quest using his own strengths alone, so he can learn what his strengths are. Where was Gandalfâ⬠(56). After Gandalf andà the companyà are saved by the eagles from the Goblins and the Wargs, they are taken to safety to eat and rest. The nextà day, Gandalf tells them that he must leave for a while. The guideà often disappears at some point along the journey to allow this to happen, which Gandalf does. With the help ofà the guide, Bilbo evolves as a leader and a hero of the group by showing his strengths. Bilbo was very brave when he got was separated from the rest of the group, and had to find his way out of the evil mountain. He also thought of a clever plan to put all of the dwarves in barrels and sail them down the river to escape. These strengthsà showà how Bilbo started out extremely cautious, and became a great leader. Bilbo eventually accepts the idea that he is leaving his safe haven in the shire and accepting the call and risks the adventure brings. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦. Bilbo could never remember how he found himself outside, without aà walkingà stick or any moneyâ⬠¦running as fast as his feet could carry him down the laneâ⬠(28). He was on his way with Gandalf to meet the others at the Inn to begin the journey. He and the others mounted the ponies and headed into the Lone-lands. He even thought to himself early in the trip that adventures were not so bad after all. He had taken a bigà stepà as he crossed the first threshold leaving his home behind to enter a world unknown. This is a critical stage in a heroââ¬â¢s journey. Bilbo Baggins clearly emerges as a heroic figure as he progresses through the stages of a heroââ¬â¢s journey as outlined by Campbell. He was called to an adventure by an outside force, Gandalf. As with many heroes he attempted to refuse the offer, but was unsuccessful. Gandalf the wizard acts as hisguideà and protector along the journey, while still allowing him to reveal his own strengths. Bilbo takes a criticalà stepà in theà processà as he crosses the threshold from his safe environment into oneà filled withà danger. He was transformed from a cautious, home loving hobbit at the beginning ofà the storyà into a brave confident hero by the end. According to Thorin, Bilbo had becomeâ⬠â⬠¦a good companion on our long road and a hobbit full of courage and resource far exceeding his sizeâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (191).

Marketing Case – Buick Motors
As mentioned above, the average age of a Buick buyer in the early to mid sass's was in their early seventies. This was compared to the average age of 52 for a new car buyer in general. In 2008, Buick sold Just over 137,000 new cars for only a 4. 6% share of overall GM sales and only a 1. 04% market share In the united States. Advertising was almost non-existent. Buck's idea of branding through corporate sponsorship of sporting events was to sponsor the Buick Open Golf Tournament. Golf Is not exactly geared towards a younger audience. Doesn't mean that the younger audience will buy into the message and be converted.There has to be a legitimate reason for a young audience to be attracted to the product and not Just because advertisers and marketers say you should. The main issue facing Buick was that they had a fleet of old looking cars that were not nearly as stylish as other luxury cars in similar segments. Management made a clear decision to market its class of automobiles to a youn g ââ¬Å"urbanâ⬠crowd in major cities with the hopes that if these urban trendsetters liked what they saw and began to purchase Buick, this would have a ripple effect into the mainstream market and would increase demand for Buick products across the board.This strategy was pursued by customizing and detailing Buick Lucent's with larger wheels, upgraded sound systems and detailing packages that catered to this younger urban buyer. The main problems with this strategy were threefold. The first problem highlighted in the case which I agree with is that management came across as insincere and out of touch. The media panel brought in by Buick commented that management ââ¬Å"showed a disconnect between the brand and its target audienceâ⬠and that ââ¬Å"Buick idea of urban seems a bit old fashionedâ⬠.Take for example Buick using Tiger Woods to remote Buick cars. As a part of Tiger's sponsorship deal with Buick, I would believe that he may own a Buick or two but I also bel ieve that Tiger's car of choice is not a Buick! The second problem with this strategy was that by attempting to target a young urban audience, Buick risked alienating its core consumer which was an elderly suburbanite who didn't have the first clue what ââ¬Å"urbanâ⬠was. If Buick customer base was alienated, that could mean the end of the brand.The third issue that I see with the strategy is a touchy one because it's a touchy subject and that is he issue of racism. When a predominantly Caucasian management team and brand attempt to target a Hispanic and African American audience, if they are perceived as not being genuine or sincere, management could face whispers of racism and an anti-Buick backlash could easily taint and destroy the brand. Solutions In order to support management's desire to attract a younger buyer, there has to be substance behind the marketing and advertising blitz.Management has to seriously review the existing cars in the Buick brand and determine what young buyers are looking for in a luxury sedan. Once these consumer wants are identified, management must cater to them and design a younger looking class of cars with a level of luxury, quality, options, performance and price point that rivals or beats its competition within the class. Strong marketing campaigns can trigger consumer demand for only so long with smoke and mirrors. At the end of the day, the product has to meet customer and price determine success.My personal observations of young car buyers are that certain aspects of a car are important to them. A sleek and sporty design is usually first and foremost. A car with regressive features like GAPS, MPH and Pod compatibility along with a high performance sound system resonate with young buyers as well. Of course young buyers don't usually have as much money as older buyers so price and affordability are important to a young buyer. In today's economy and society, young buyers are more conscious of going green and gas consu mption so the cars should be fuel efficient and exceed emissions standards.I also believe that Buick isn't ready to Jump into the ââ¬Å"urbanâ⬠market. While I do believe in marketing towards a younger audience, I'm not sure I would risk the brand on ailing to the urban market in the hopes that this will crossover to mainstream America. There are plenty of marketing opportunities that can target a younger audience in mainstream America. Today, movie theaters show ads prior to movies and as we all know, young people make up the largest share of movie goers.I like Buick strategy of displaying Buick outside of clubs, bars, trendy shops and restaurants. At this stage of their brand repositioning, any ââ¬Å"buzzâ⬠about a Buick is great for the brand and to have it on the tips of people's tongues is the first step in hanging consumer perception that a Buick can be an option for a young buyer. I would also look to supplement traditional marketing strategies like print, TV, bil lboards and national campaigns with an internet and social media marketing strategy and campaign on Twitter and Backbone.Young consumers have a vast and important presence on these social media outlets. I would look to sever ties with the Golf sponsorship and Tiger Woods and either eliminate the use of celebrity endorsements altogether or revisit the celebrity spokesperson to be a more realistic Buick user. Any strategy to increase market share in the luxury segment must involve dealing with the strong presence that imports have. The main way that domestic cars can compete with imports is on price.Young buyers are also very focused on price especially if they are a first time car buyer or even a baby boomer looking to save money in a tight economy. Based on my problem cited above with young buyer perceptions of what a Buick is, it would seem that Buick would struggle to get potential young buyers into their showrooms to even test drive a Buick. As such I would consider providing inc entives o prospective buyers to come to a dealer and test drive a Buick. These could include cash payments or a reduction in price if they purchase a Buick.

What I am Passionate About
Usain Bolt has won six Olympic gold medals. What do they all have in common? It is not that they won numerous gold medals. It Is they are all passionate about what they do, Since I started preschool at age four, my time outside of school have been piled up with never ending activities, first there was ballet, then came ice skating, art class, then swimming, chess, thenPlano, speed reading, and flute. Whenever I quit doing one thing, I picked up something new. As the years go by, most of these activities are only memories, but one thing has rooted inside of me. After a day of academic learning and demanding homework, I will quickly retreat into my safe haven, drawing. I love drawing. I think I am better at it than spelling. Maybe that is the reason I am better at math and science than reading and writing in school. To me, math and science is another way of drawing using dfferent media.I believe when writers want to write, their minds will be filled with words and sentences, but when I want to express myself, my mind will be filled with images and graphics. School, homework, and keeping up good grades can be pretty stressful, When I draw, I feel I am In a world where there are endless sunshine, a warm breeze, soft rolling green hills, fragrant flowers, morning dew on the bright green grass, chirping birdsâ⬠¦ sometimes there are lines, geometric shapes, and dots which all Intertwine In the endless void.As long as I can Imagine, I can draw, I feel happy. People often think artists are only appreciated when they are dead. I believe that is a narrow way to appreciate art. Art is the major part of our life. Everything we live by pretty much started out with an Idea throwing on a piece of paper in the form of sketch or drawing. How would Thomas Edison plan out his idea for the light bulb? Drawing has become a major part of me; it has become my anchor and my passion and I am pretty darn good at It.

Feminism and Art Essay
Feminist activity had been a rising concern in the late 1900ââ¬â¢s which is based merely off of the emotional significance of personal and psychological reasoning. Rather than reacting on this issue based on historical evidence, the issue is based on immediate needs on the feminist attack. Linda Nochlin, and other important scholars and philosophers explain the psychology, philosophy, sociology, and history of art and the feminist movement pertaining to art. Linda Nochlin was the author of this piece, and used both her own knowledge to write this piece, as well as other scholars and philosophers arguments, injected them into her writing, and elaborated on their ideas and arguments. When pertaining to psychology, the issues mentioned and elaborated on were how women were rejected, which led to their thoughts, feelings, and emotions being affected. Because of this, this changed their way of interpreting things, and their views of things were different from men. From a philosophical stand point, Nochlin refers to John Stuart Mill who says that he suggests that we tend to accept things that come natural to us, or that are natural, like male domination; this means that males dominate over women, and women having no say in anything, accept what is natural because back in the day, male domination was a normal thing to women and was a natural behavior. Thinking about sociology, in society, men had to work and had to be educated. Women on the other hand were not allowed and treated as objects, and stayed home to have children and to continue on the male name. ââ¬Å"In general, womenââ¬â¢s experience and situation in society, and hence as artists, is different from menââ¬â¢s, and certainly the art produced by a group of consciously united and purposefully articulate women intent on bodying forth a group of consciousness of feminine experience might indeed be stylistically identifiable as feminists, if not feminine art. â⬠Historically, women werenââ¬â¢t allowed to be educated unless they were wealthy, or had and greater importance over other women. This is why women didnââ¬â¢t know how to paint because they werenââ¬â¢t allowed to learn how, this is also why there were not so many women artists back then, and if there were, they were not well known. An important question that has been posed multiple times within this piece was, ââ¬Å"Why have there been no great women artists? â⬠3 3 ââ¬Å"Why have there been no great women artistsâ⬠is what Linda is arguing. Her argument is that there are no great women artists that compare to all of these great and well-known artists that art historians study. These famous artists studied today are, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, etc. Linda also states that it is in human nature that men dominate women. It is an instinct that has been created ever since humans walked this earth, and is something that is still being battled today. By answering the question, ââ¬Å"Why have there been no great women artistsâ⬠, which has been questioned by many, Linda proves her arguments by referring to many who have either answered, or attempted to answer this question. Those who have either done it or attempted it are: John Stuart Mill, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Mary Ellmann. All of these theorists/writers attempted to answer the same exact question by simply reinforcing the negative implications, or by saying that there is a different kind of greatness that exists for women, and also how experiences that women go through in society affects their art, which may mean that they were not accepted by the great viewers, which were men. Men and women have different values and interpretation of art, and to men, womenââ¬â¢s art was nothing. When structure of this essay is concerned, it is in fact structured in a number of 4 4 ways which include, historical events, arguments, theories, and facts. The argument is pronounced using different methods, which explains subjects using points from the other scholars and their explanations. Initially, the argument made was intangible, later it becomes clear when Nochlin first talks about the battle against feminism, and how it has been around for years, even decades. Later, she begins to say how feminism caused such emotional, and psychological damage and pain to women for a long period of time. Many reasons why feminism had occurred was explored by Nochlin, and answered the question by John Stuart Millââ¬â¢s response to male dominancy. Her reasoning for why there were no famous female artists was because of men, and how they overruled women in society; her argument was supported with many arguments written from other writers in the past. At the end of each of her arguments, she ends with the famous question, ââ¬Å"Why have there been no great women artistsâ⬠, and leaves it to be answered by another writer. Many say it is in male nature to dominate, or maybe women just canââ¬â¢t achieve as much greatness as men. Maybe women paint from their psychological views of things, and this was frowned upon by men; women were not allowed to think, let alone paint about what they were thinking. When comparing known women artists to well known male artists, no woman artist compares to the master of art, Michelangelo. The next division of this essay was ââ¬Å"The Question of the Nudes. â⬠ââ¬Å" We can now approach our question from a more reasonable standpoint, since it seems probable that the answer to why there have been no great women artists lies not in the nature of individual genius or lack of it, but in the nature of given institutions and what they forbid or encouraged in various classes or group of individualsâ⬠, p. 158. Since the 1800ââ¬â¢s, nude models were females, and would go to school to help the new and sprouting artists to learn and practice art. Females who wanted to participate and learn to paint the human body were rejected because society did not allow women to look at another female or male nude. Men were allowed to study the female nude because to them, they were objects. However, male nudes (models) were never classified as objects. ââ¬Å"As late as 1893, ââ¬Å"ladyâ⬠students were not admitted to life drawing at the Royal Academy in London, and even when they were, after that date, the model had to be ââ¬Å"partially draped. â⬠P. 158. Women had very little knowledge in painting and therefore were quite timid because of all the pressure that was placed on them by the society, and most commonly, men. Many of those who studied nude models and produced nude figure drawings later became doctors, and professional artists; once again women were not permitted to become either of those. In order to become a professional artist, however, you needed to be good in literature, and had to have knowledge of many techniques. It was uncommon for women to be educated because schoolââ¬â¢s had high expectations. There were consequences if a woman wanted to be a painter. If you were a woman painter, and were substantially committed to painting, you were expected to forget about having a future. This included a husband, family, career, etc. This was the case in the 19th century because women ââ¬Å"couldnââ¬â¢t focusâ⬠on more than one thing at a time according to men and society, therefore our only options were to become a painter and have no outside life, or forget about being a painter and have a family. Women had come a long way by this time, and women were allowed to play music, sculpt, and draw, but were considered weak, and couldnââ¬â¢t pursue any labor work. One of the great women artists, Maurice Bompard, suffered greatly with her paintings because society classified them as being too sexual, and not serious enough; she struggled greatly to achieve the greatness she deserved. Rosa Bonheur was another well known woman artist, and her success changed the view of society on women artists, but still struggled because of her gender. Her father was a drawing master, so she loved to draw and paint at an early age. Rosa created a new style of painting in the 19th century, and this was to paint in smaller scale. She has the ability to capture naturalism, soul, and individuality, and was well known for her ââ¬Å"Barbizonâ⬠landscapes. 6 , 6 The rhetorical method in this piece would be repeating the question, ââ¬Å"Why Have There Been No Great Women Artistsâ⬠, and this depicts the importance of this issue which has been raised by all of the philosophers, writers, and art historians that have been attempting to answer this question for decades. The tone of voice used in the essay is persuasion, frustration, and even determination, and this makes it easier for the reader to understand and illustrate what exactly the issue is and how important it is. In Nochlinââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Why Have There Been No Great Women Artistsâ⬠, she states the importance of womenââ¬â¢s history, and makes women aware of how grateful they should be with everything women are allowed to do today. Because of those many strong women who stood up for what they believed in, women today have equal rights to men, and can pursue any path they so wish to take.

As for the brain-based research, it is interesting to find out that there are discoveries linking the brain and how students learn. However, I find the content lacking to make it quite convincing. In my opinion, the information should be presented in a more concrete way. The methods in which the outcome of the said research may be applied should be expounded. For instance, the relationship between the anatomy of the brain and progressing learning could have been poignantly considered through meaningful exampl es. It would be more informative if several scientifically-based frameworks in furthering learning were specified. Regarding the authentic assessment, I find that there is nothing much new about its description. As what the site stated, ââ¬Å"not enoughâ⬠can be said about it. ... In what ways do you feel you already differentiate? As I reflect on my experience as a teacher, I can remember faces of some students who do not seem engaged in the lesson proper. I felt like they are uninterested. Some were perhaps totally clueless of what their classmates are talking about. For instance, some children do better when it comes to group work whereas some to be more at ease at individual tasks. The diversity of interests and learning styles, and competencies in the classroom made me realize the importance of differentiated instruction. In order for me to be able to have a meaningful communication with my students, I have to make the topics relevant to them. For them to understand, I have to present topics in ways that are interesting in their respective perception. As a teacher, I have to respect the uniqueness of each mind I am supposed to hone. Thus, to differentiate is indeed a need. I feel that I was somehow already into differentiated instruction when I realized that I have to consider each student when I am teaching, I tried to extend my methods and references as much as possible. I particularly researched on the different learning styles and multiple intelligences. Several tests were available to determine a studentââ¬â¢s learning preferences. These were helpful in confirming and guiding my approach to each child.
